This month, we investigate the renaissance of satellite, which has shaken off its woes over Globalsat and Iridium to make a major contribution to broadband. VSAT technology has brought reliable, high-performance, low-cost and unmetered broadband to some of the world’s remotest locations. We also take a look at how businesses are looking towards sustainable practices to actually improve corporate performance and at how data loss prevention (DLP) technology is helping organizations stop confidential information from falling into the wrong hands.
We hope you enjoy this month's Enterprise Briefing.
the selection of the month...
The failures of Iridium and Globalstar are well and truly forgotten. The satellite industry is once again in a rude state of health - the demand for satellite TV is insatiable, while satellite radio, navigation and portable phones have also found their profitable niche.
A new survey of US businesses, representing a diverse range of firms such as Dow Chemical, Bank of America
and Herman Miller, found that half of CFOs believe sustainability will boost revenue, investor returns and employee retention.
Data loss has become one of the most talked about topics in security. Employee carelessness and malicious behavior is exposing confidential data, which is putting companies at competitive, regulatory and financial risk. To combat the threat, many companies are now taking an information-centric approach to security and using data leakage protection (DLP) tools.
The cost of data breaches is rising, according to a study
by security analysts the Ponemon Institute. In 2007, the average breach cost the company $6.3 million, compared
to $4.8 million in 2006. The report looked at the result of
35 actual data breaches experienced by US companies in 2007.
We are just ending the first phase of a fundamental transformation of the IT organization. At the beginning of this transformation, virtually all IT organizations were comprised of myriad stovepipe functions; eg, devices, networks, servers, storage, databases, security and operating systems. Leading-edge IT organizations have now recognized that IT needs to be comprised of just two functions, application development and application delivery, and that these functions must work in an integrated fashion in order for the IT organization to ensure acceptable application performance. This view of IT affects everything - including the organizational structure, the management metrics and the requisite processes, technologies and tools.
